Timeshare Upgrades: Questions to Ask Before You Buy

An upgrade is another purchase decision. Before agreeing to more points, a different membership level or a replacement contract, compare the new obligations with the ownership you already have.

Identify the problem the upgrade is supposed to solve

Write down why the upgrade was recommended. Is it intended to improve reservation access, add travel benefits, change fees or replace an older contract? Ask for the precise benefit and where it appears in the proposed agreement.

If you have difficulty booking now, request a demonstration using the dates and locations you actually want. Ask which booking windows, membership rules and availability restrictions would still apply. More points do not answer every reservation question.

Compare the complete cost

Put the old and new offers side by side: purchase price, interest rate, financed balance, loan term, maintenance fees, assessments and transaction charges. Ask whether the new loan includes any balance from the old agreement.

Check whether the offer changes one ownership or leaves you with two. Get a written explanation of how the old deed, membership or loan will be handled. Use the maintenance-fee calculator to explore your own assumptions, then compare them with the actual documents.

Test the promises behind the presentation

  • Ask whether a benefit is guaranteed in the contract or subject to program rules.
  • Check restrictions on point transfers, banking, rentals and guest use.
  • Identify which costs may increase after the first year.
  • Ask what happens if the advertised booking access is unavailable.
  • Keep any written explanation of how the upgrade affects your current ownership.

Take time to review the documents away from the presentation. A membership label or discount does not replace a comparison of the obligations you are accepting.

If you have already upgraded

Keep both sets of contracts and check the cancellation instructions for the new purchase promptly. Ask the developer to confirm the status of your previous ownership in writing.

If the documents differ from what you understood, describe the discrepancy in a dated written complaint. A licensed attorney can review legal questions about the agreement. If you want to explore leaving your ownership, start with the developer's current options and our guide to exit paths.
